In the lead-up to Christmas, I’ve been thinking about the first competition I ever won. I was eight years old and entered a Christmas themed poetry contest at the local chocolate shop. Well, I came third, but I was so excited, because it meant I could choose any chocolate in the shop as my prize, including chocolate pizzas!
I believed I won because of my unique rhyming scheme and nonsense words that felt real enough to me.
Now it’s middle of December, I’ve asked the dominators to share their most loved and most hated things at this time of year. Let’s see if my bronze award still holds up…
A Very Submissive Christmas
Jamie and Freddie G love Christmas feasts piled high,
Pigs in blankets, gravy rivers, plates stacked to the sky—
But tidying up or festive films after? They’d rather cry.
Leo and Charlie love the lights, the stockings, and merried fun,
But when the extended cousins show up… both simply run.
Freddie M and Lily love Christmas Eve and Boxing Day snacks,
But waking hungover or the blues when it’s over? They want their joy back.
Nicholas and Pierre love the sentiment, the joy of being together,
But hate when Christmas ends—why can’t it last forever?
Naoise and Ore love the trees, the drinking, the family spree,
But too much Catholic-ness or relatives around? “Nay for me.”
Kojo and Teo love presents - being youngest pays off in gold,
But washing up or life-choice questions? They’re suddenly too old.
Harry and Shadun love log fires, food, and a cheeky family smoke,
But parents’ friends and overstimulation? That’s the holiday joke.
Joe and George love undisturbed family time, carols, and nostalgia as a babe,
But forced cheer, winter miseries, and awful stocking fillers? “Ugh Christmas is ok.”
You see I love to celebrate Christmas in all its English cheer,
yet in Italy we prefer the witch of Befana, and by then it’s already past new year!
And dear Pantos with traditions too many to fit in the rhyme—
Let’s just say they love it all… and still hate it half the time.
