Who Are Ya?

boa-who-are-you

We had yet another book crit this week. We have them every week, but this one was a little different. Instead of seeing our scores on the big screen, we were told them face to face. It was a great process. Our mentors could look into our eyes and tell us what they thought.
I was worried.
Recently I’ve started to find a bit of a flow. I’ve started making work for me. Stuff that I believe solves problems for brands. Solves problems for real people. I believe that it’s this sweet spot between the both where the interesting stuff happens. But this isn’t the approach everyone takes. And because of that, I was worried. Worried that I was doing advertising the wrong way.
But I was wrong.
Every mentor said something similar to me. They liked that I’d found my way, and this was a good thing. But it was Marc’s feedback that really opened my eyes. It went something like this:

“Who are you?”

These words are some of the most important feedback I’ve ever had. We all have our own experiences, a life before SCA. That’s what makes this school so interesting. We’re a haphazard bunch full of musicians, surveyors, account managers, artists, architects, graphic designers, photographers, set designers, Gooners, drug dealers, poets….. and the list goes on. That’s the one thing that makes SCA unique. We don’t come in because of qualifications, we come in with a life. A life that knew nothing about advertising.
That’s our strength. That’s who we are. That’s what we’ve got over any other ad portfolio.
I think it’s time we all started showing it.
