What have I become?

I just watched a Disney film and it broke me.  I’m not sure if I was just being pathetic or if my hangover had just completely overwhelmed me, but my god….

I mean technically it wasn’t a straight up Disney film (it was made by Pixar) and I’ve just found out that it might be up for the Best Picture award at next year’s Oscars (so that takes a little bit of the embarrassment away) but still, I thought this old boy was emotionally dead, so to feel some actual emotion as a result of a kid’s film is pretty ridiculous.

The film was called Inside Out.  An animation released earlier this year that tells the story of an 11 year old girl (called Rilley) and her struggles to manage all the emotions flying around in her head.

I won’t give away any spoilers (film spoilers to be a running trend within our intake), but the film’s about how we learn to to deal with life’s obstacles by knowing when we need the voices for anger, joy, disgust, fear, and sadness to take over.  For Riley, the obstacle she has to overcome is the disappointment with her big family move from Minnesota (where her life was pretty sweet) to San Francisco (where she knows no-one.)

A story about juggling emotions may sound like a recipe for disaster (a.k.a a rom-com), but believe me when I say that this story is said in such an amazing way, that I’d argue that it’s one of the best films released in years.

Side note – There’s something hilarious about taking an idiom like ‘the voices in your head’ literally and running away with it for an idea.  There must be some good comedy sketches/stories to come out of some of these, for example:

  • I’m in a pickle
  • It’s raining cats and dogs
  • Making a dog’s dinner out of something
  • A rule of thumb
  • Finding your feet

Anyway, less sequels and more originals from Pixar in the future please.  You don’t get scenes like this one from Up with sequels – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2bk_9T482g .

P.S – I’m still a man. Don’t judge me.
