The value of time – By @LeonoreLeitner

The value of time

We are already 3 weeks into the second term and I really start to feel what the phrase “manage time or time manages you” means. Even if the pressure is for sure not where it will be in some weeks time, I already feel like time is managing me. The days are slipping through my fingers and I can’t get hold of them. Every one of them is passing by so quickly. I feel like there is no time. No time to get all the things done that I want to get done. No time to make things as good as I want them to be.

How can I change my time management for the better?

To succeed here in SCA, I think one of the key things is not who spends the most time on our briefs – because everybody spends a lot of time on them – it is who spends their time most effectively. It’s how concentrated you work and how much you get done while you’re working. It’s how fast you are. It really is so true that it doesn’t matter how hard you work, if you don’t work smart.

I wonder what defines how fast you are. Is it only concentration? Is it practice, the way your brain works, or how clever you are?

It’s high time to get better at my time management, so I won’t drown when more workload is coming. The struggle of time management has always – my whole life – been one of the biggest issues for me. I never feel fast enough, no matter how much I get done, it isn’t good enough, I’m not trying hard enough. So how can I get better and faster at using my time without falling into the trap of constantly putting myself down because I’m not where I want to be.

Since I’ve moved to London, I have given up a lot of things that I used to waste some of my time on, in my young years before I turned 22. And I’m feeling good about it but it’s still a far way to go, to make the best out of my limited time here.
I think one of the most important things to do, is to set proper goals and knowing how to get there. The part of the gratitude book that says ‘How I’ll make today great’, seems like the perfect 4 lines to set your goals for the day and to get your priorities straight onto the paper to focus on them.

Something else that will help me valuing my time more, is aiming to use my time the same way I imagine the people I admire using it.

You have to remind yourself that you have as much time in a day as everyone else – 24 hours you can use or waste. Some people compare the amount of hours they have in a day to a day in Beyonce’s life. I, for now, will remind myself that I have as many hours as the incredibly inspiring Graeme Hall.
