This blog post is a little late, but for a very good reason. I’ve spent the past 48 hours trying to crack the Cannt Skinny Cubs brief.

Three weeks before portfolio day, when there is so much still left to do, adding another deadline into the mix is the last thing most people would want to take on. However, This Creative Team decided it was a no brainer to relish another opportunity.

Everything else had to be put on hold, all our current briefs, portfolio spit & polish, and of course this blog post, but we feel it has already been worth while to put our other work on the back burner and turn up the pressure a few more notches.

The opening event provided us with a chance to network, eye up the competition, and receive book crits from mentors we haven’t met before. We know by now that any chance for networking should be jumped upon and a chance to show some work always sweetens the deal.

The crit with Matt Stafford gave us some excellent advice and introduced us to a few other ways we could take our campaigns. That was all we wanted, but it was made even better when he gave us some Hello You Creative T-shirts, result!

The next day we received a nice surprise when we saw he tweeted our Volvo campaign as one of the highlights of the night. It’s nice to have our work thought of as a highlight, but we were more chuffed about the publicity it could give us. After all, you never know who’s going to see it.

Will the competition give us the win we want? Maybe. We tried our best on the brief and produced something we are somewhat happy with, maybe something that will go in our book, but we don’t think for one minute that we will get close to winning, but that isn’t the only reward.

The opportunity could come from just having our work featured on the website and going through the judging process. The agencies and judges that will see it may just give us the win we are after, the chance of a placement or even a job. Isn’t that what we all want? That’s why we are at the school and why we are creating our book.

Doing this one competition may not get us there, but then again it might. You don’t know whom your work might appear in front of. We really didn’t have the time to do this brief, but I’m glad we didn’t pass it up.

You have to take every opportunity to get your face and your work out there; you never know where it might lead.
