Portfolio Brief 1 -The Wall @_ElliotL

By Elliot Lee

Portfolio Brief 1 has been a headf**k. Managing time has been a headf**k. Making time to actually have a normal life has not been happening, and we’ve not even broken into term 2 yet.

There are two reasons why. I can only speak on behalf of myself, but these are the reasons for why I feel this has been a concern. Firstly, because it’s still in the early stages of the course, we tend to listen to every mentor that has input in a project. At the SCA you get hundreds of opportunities to meet such well renowned and experienced industry experts, and you also value other peoples opinions over others. It’s a learning process in itself, choosing when to stop approaching mentors, and who to listen to more to guide an idea.

Secondly, we are still learning. Of course, everyone wants to produce the very best work they possibly can. However, learning and failing to better ourselves as creatives is much more beneficial than developing work you deem great.

Days go quickly at this place. Imagination and thinking is our job, it’s a fun thing to do so the days seem to fly by. It’s important to constantly recognise what we’re doing at this school, and where the end goal is.

That being said, it’s been difficult to make time to do things outside the school. The biggest reason is that we can only speed up and get better during this process, and catching up is the difficult part.

This week, I purchased the Best Self – Self Journal book off Jem. Though I have only been using it for 2 days, it’s ability to allow you to reflect through carefully placed subheadings makes it a great asset for creating targets for the things that you want to achieve, and how to tackle obstacles that get in the way of this. I’m been big on spirituality, gratitude and self-reflection since this summer past, and this is another weapon I can add to my arsenal for self-progression, and winning the SCA experience.

To anyone new reading this and looking to apply to the school. If ideas and creativity are where you see yourself, then this is the place to be. However, when you watch Marc’s videos, read previous blogs, current blogs of people expressing how difficult this school is, they are not bullsh***ing.

I’ve learnt more in the last 3-4 months and worked harder more consistently than I did within 3 years at university.
