Love Army @ManonHede

By Manon Hede

A few weeks ago, you may have seen the hashtag #LoveArmyForRohingya on social networks.

#LoveArmyForRohingya is an initiative to raise awareness of the crisis in Burma against the Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic group living in the south-east of Burma in Arakan State.

This hashtag was launched by Jérôme Jarre.

I discovered Jérôme Jarre in 2014 thanks to Vine, a social network that was closed in 2016.
Since then Jérôme Jarre has become an influence, an influence who is committed to humanitarian work and has been creating the Love Army since last year.

He has already travelled to Somalia or Mexico, for example, where he has mobilized a number of Youtube celebrities and artists to visit Somalia and raise public awareness of the humanitarian crisis that has been going on for months.

But what happens in Burma and Bangladesh?

The Rohingya are a persecuted Muslim minority.

They are not entitled to Burmese nationality and have no rights or protection in this part of western Burma.

This crisis has been entrenched for a long time.

Since August, violence against the Rohingya has intensified. There are reports of 646,000 people fleeing from Burma to Bangladesh, where they are settling in refugee camps.

The UN and the NGO Médecins sans Frontières now speak of “ethnic cleansing”.

Médecins Sans Frontières estimates that at least 6700 people died in the month following the outbreak of this unprecedented wave of violence.

The agency states in passing that this number is largely underestimated.

Thanks to the Love Army, made up of many youtube peoples and artists, Jérôme Jarre had managed to raise $1.5 million in food for Somalia.

The main actors of the Love Army for the Rohingya mission are French.

I put here some links from some of these people, subtitled in English, to understand the problem, as well as the actions of the Love Army:

If you would like to help, you can provide financial support to the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, which works on the spot.
