Let’s Start Today – By @charlesfare

Let’s Start Today

We had to hand in our portfolios today and I committed the cardinal sin of not only handing it in late, but handing in an incomplete book. I thought I’d be able to get away with finishing off a poster in the evening after comedy class and printing off my SMPs first thing in the morning.

Several missed alarms and a printer queue about 60 students deep put the kibosh on those plans. Bum deal, right?

Well, the fact of the matter is that neither of those things are good enough excuses. I could have taken an hour out of my afternoon yesterday to put the finishing touches to my poster, polish up my SMPs and have the whole thing printed and ready with plenty of time to spare. But I didn’t and I’ve only got myself to blame.

I guess I wasn’t alone in my lack of effort because Marc gave us all a big dressing down at this morning’s town hall. Usually when I’m being lectured my natural inclination is to push against what I’m being told. I’ll dig both feet into the ground and respond to all harsh words with a resounding “nah, you’re wrong.”

But as the whole thing went on, I started to clock something: The guy’s right. Handing in an incomplete portfolio past deadline is a C- effort, regardless of the content inside (of which I’m actually, very very proud).

There’s about one-hundred-and-something days left of the course. That might sound like a lot but time is running out fast. In fact, given the fact that I’m about 5 years older than the average student on the course, you could maybe argue that my time is running out faster.

I need to use that time wisely. I need to work harder. I need stop missing deadlines. Good thing I know that I can do all of that if I put my mind to it. It’s not hard, it’s just a matter of effort.

This all reminds me of a song called Start Today by a band called Gorilla Biscuits. The lyrics are a bit corny, but the message and the way it’s delivered are really quite life affirming:

Next time I’ll try

For the first time in my life

It won’t pass me by

Procrastinate it can wait, I put it off

Let’s start today, let’s start today
