Dyslexia  – By @j_kburgess

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling. It’s a specific learning difficulty, which means it causes problems with certain abilities used for learning, such as reading and writing. It is not the same as Dyspraxia so don’t get confused.

To actually be diagnosed with dyslexia you need to go through a few assessments. You can’t just say your dyslexic in order to get that snazzy 50% off a laptop and a free printer. ( trust me, I know people who have tried ) and to be honest, don’t know why you would. The humiliation of haviIng miss read a word in class or the condescending looks from teachers when you missed the oh so special apostrophe in you’re is not worth it. Before you say it, of course, I know how important punctuation is. Trust me, I punish myself enough when I finally realise I have got it wrong. My most recent test was when I arrived at drama school and a few of the results go as so:

This dyslexia relates primarily to phonologicam processing difficulties and rapid naming which includes word retrieval.

Phonological processing is the ability to process sounds in spoken language. In other words, if you say a word to me that I have never heard before, it is really difficult for me to repeat it. You might guess that this would suck for trying to learn a new language and you would be correct in thinking so.

My score rapid naming was low average but when asked to define words it was most noticeable that I could not sometimes retrieve the words from my long-term memory. As we all know from the delightful and insightful Your Memory book, retrieve is one of the 3 trusty R’s that are the vital stages notf the memory. I’m going to have to pull my finger out and work even harder if I’m going to keep up with my peers this term.

Despite this, I have really grown to love reading ( even though I fall asleep after 15 minutes because my brain is working at double the speed it should). So what, my love for words is recent and the most books I’ve read in a month has been the StupidCAs reading list. Its a start and honestly, I can’t wait to devour every book that is comes my way to me.
