Dispatches from the frontline – Part 2

Heres a few more tips that might help people when they are out on placement. If you have not read part 1, its here: https://schoolcommunicationarts.com/dispatches-from-the-frontline-by-mrbengolding/

  • Remember to work on your own shit. All the time. Do the clever thing and get in an hour early and work at it then. You look productive as hell too.
  • Sometimes its good early on to do, as the military would call it, a show of force. Don’t just try and nail a brief, decimate it. Make the other creatives embarrassed. Play to your own strengths to make it a bit easier, but go above and beyond and beyond and beyond.
  • Think about your CDs radar. You are so far over on the periphery that you barely register. In order not to blend in with the last placement team and the next placement team you need to do something to stand out.
  • It might feel like everyone is watching and judging you. But this is wrong. You could fail massively and no-one would really care. You’ve got to give them a reason to care about the work you do.
  • Buy headphones. It can get really buzzy in some offices so its good to have some tunes to focus you. But, be prepared to leave one ear ‘off’ so you can listen to the occasional chat, you never know what you might pick up.
  • Get chummy with planners and other creatives, you never know the kind of steer they can give you on a brief. Also, they are great to speak to rather than bothering your CD.
  • Make a mixtape called super-mega-awesome-choons and blast it to get you psyched during the post-lunchtime food coma.
  • Get used to writing tv scripts, radio scripts and coming up with social posts. They are not going to feature in your book, but thats a big part of what you’ll be asked to do at an agency. If you’re lucky.
