Championing local Brixton creatives

Champion push for young Brixton creative to win scholarship at the School of Communication Arts 2.0

The School of Communication Arts 2.0, based in the converted former nightclub Mass in St Matthews Church, is an ad school with a difference. They don’t just do advertising – they do ideas that solve problems and add value to the world, supported by leading agencies including Langlands, AMV and BBH to name a few. The school is like a working ad agency, and the students’ on the job experience is second to none.

Now in its 4th year, the school is ready to give out its 28th, 29th and 30th full funded scholarships, worth £12,000 each.

The School of Communication Arts are keen for one of these scholarships to go a local young person, and have partnered Champion, to help specifically target the Brixton community.

Champion’s not-for-profit fund Champion Presents… currently sells ‘Great Brixton’ t-shirts, with all proceeds going to directly into the hands of young creative talent. If an applicant from the local area wins a scholarship in 2013, Champion will provide additional financial support toward their living costs for the full school year.

Both Champion & the School for Communication Arts feel that it’s important to support local creative talent, and are keen to promote creative industry careers to local people who may not have seriously considered a career in advertising before. We want to show that an academic background isn’t necessarily relevant – and that it’s the ability to demonstrate problem solving and lateral thinking that is what’s important.

‘This scholarship is a chance for the next generation of creative talent to come forward. It’s a brilliant opportunity to learn from the best in the creative business and show us all just how the inspiring diversity of Brixton can create new problem solving answers. If you think differently, and are aged over 18, you have to enter, as this environment supports, nurtures and develops that difference.’ Scott Leonard, founder and Creative Director of Champion.

Marc Lewis, the school’s Dean is a great advocate of promoting diversity and fairness and strongly believes that scholarships should do just that,

‘Education can be unbalanced socially and by breaking down barriers we can make it more inclusive. Diversity leads to better ideas and ultimately makes our industry stronger’.

Posters created by the SCA will be going up around Brixton and are available to download online. The aim is for them be shared on blogs and websites and across local media, as well as in schools/colleges/youth clubs to reach potential applicants that aren’t usually found via traditional channels.

Created by winners of an internal school competition, former scholars Martins and David used witty graphic novel style animation to demonstrate sheer problem solving creativity. There are all sorts of responses to both every day and challenging briefs, and the poster specifically targets diverse thinkers who may not know yet know they are a ‘creative’.

Application Closing Date:

Friday 28th June 2013. There will be 10 entrants shortlisted and 3 recipients who will win a full scholarship. One will be the ‘most liked’ entrant as voted for on social media platforms and the remaining 2 will be judged by the students and ultimately by the Dean and Langland. We would strongly like one of these to go to a local applicant. If a local applicant wins one of the three scholarships, they will in addition receive a contribution to living costs from The Champion Agency. For full terms and conditions see the website www.SCAscholarship.com. The winners will be announced at the school’s end of year party which this year is due to be held in mid July.
