Be brave and do something you love

This time 3 years ago was preparing myself to head down to Cardiff to start a international business management degree. The family were all pretty proud that i got into a decent university and to study something that sounds like you could make a bit of money from and they were willing to invest the cash to safeguard me getting that bit of paper at the end. I did feel i needed to make this work, i didn’t particularly want to have the same chat with my dad after I left my Job in France, moved back without telling any of my family and enrolled in a access course which then got me into uni.

So i got there and it didn’t take long for me to realise something was up, I mean when Andy Dufresne’s cell is in better shape than your halls you can’t not think of escaping. So instead of shuffling through a mile of sewage i put in a request to move halls which got accepted. I felt as though with good behaviour i managed to get some privileges back but unfortunately the move didn’t sort out all my problems. Every day was a boring struggle, the only time i was happy in a lecture theatre was when someone did a weird sneeze. The last nail in the coffin was a 2 hour lecture about the german industrial revolution – I’d rather shit on my hands and clap than have to sit through that again. It took me 2 years to come to the concrete conclusion that i wasn’t cut out for this whole shabang and that i needed to do something i love. Whilst still technically at uni i booked myself on to a open day at Central St. Martains to checkout a course called Culture, Communication and Curation and it was there i saw UAL’s strapline that was on all their perspective student bumf, ‘Be brave and do something you love’ and it hit the nostalgic spot in me. The CSM course seemed alright but it wasn’t getting me excited, luckily i have found that something that I’m going to love doing…most of the time, but no matter how hard it gets i can take solace in the fact that I’m never going to be back in the Aberconway building listening to Dr Morgan chat about quantitative easing.

In the words of Mr Dufresne “I guess it come down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying
