21 Things I’ve Learnt in 21 Years

January 29th is my 21st birthday. I wanted to reflect on some of the most important and special things I’ve learnt during this time.

  1. Stop saying you want to do things. Start doing them instead.

  1. Being late is very uncool.

  1. People appreciate the things you make, create, give, write and do for them more than you know. If you don’t have any money, use your time. Express your love with creativity and thoughtfulness.

  1. Eating better will make you feel better. Read, tidy your house, change your sheets, buy new music, go to mum and dad’s for dinner, walk the dogs, put the radio on. These things will change your mood in a positive way.

  1. It is not that difficult being tidy. You have just been lazy.

  1. If you don’t feel like you’re surrounded by the right people, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. It takes time to find the people who inspire you. Once you do, you’ll feel it and cherish it.

  1. Managing your time actually works and is not a myth created by Paperchase or Marc Lewis to sell diaries.

  1. Doing more with your time will not make you more tired. You will feel more tired when you do not do anything at all.

  1. The optimum time for a big weekly shop is 9pm on a Saturday night.

  1. When you fail or the result isn’t what you hoped for, dwelling on it and making yourself feel bad on purpose is only harming yourself. No one else thinks you are a failure. Only you. The way to get over and past it is to stop using it as ammunition against yourself and do it again but differently.

  1. Dogs are the cure 90% of the time you feel a bit shit.

  1. When you have a bizarre thought, write it down. Don’t lose it.

  1. Walking into new places and situations is never as awkward as hanging around outside them. Bite the bullet.

  1. Your family will stress you out more than anyone else on the planet because they are exactly like you. Don’t take the bait. Appreciate and reciprocate love as much as you can.

  1. Every dumb thing you’ve seen, read or watch is probably going to come in handy at some point.

  1. You learn to love the way you look, how you behave, how you dress and who you are. It can’t be forced and it is hard work but when you do, it is incredibly freeing. You may not feel like this all the time but you will fight this by telling yourself what you know.

  1. You only liked going out all the time because you had no responsibilities. You do not miss going out all the time because having a clear head is now important.

  1. When you find yourself working hard or late at night, you have found something you actually enjoy doing.

  1. Don’t be a dick. The more you do for other people, the more they will do for you. Nobody likes to be used and everybody wants to help out their friends.

  1. Every time you make a leap and apply, say yes, ask for a meeting, you are doing something right. There will never be a time when you’re not nervous but you will have regrets for missing out on things that could open doors.

  1. Friendship and love is a two-way street. Treat them with the same compassion and empathy that you feel you deserve.

Be grateful. You are so lucky and so loved.
